Heilongjiang
Harbin’s ice festival, the slopes of Yabuli and the snow-buried houses of Snow Town — China’s winter in one trip.
Travel Heilongjiang with local experts
Heilongjiang is China’s northernmost province, and its long, cold winters make it the country’s favourite place for ice and snow. The capital Harbin hosts Ice and Snow World, and buildings such as St Sophia Cathedral and Central Street keep an early-20th-century Russian look.
Southeast of Harbin lies the Yabuli ski area, and further east, in Mudanjiang, Snow Town’s roofs disappear under deep snow lit by red lanterns at night. Winter tours usually depart between December and February; we will tell you what to pack for the cold.
