Staying Safe in China

China is generally safe for visitors. Mind your documents, belongings, traffic and mountain weather, and you can travel with confidence.

Documents and belongings

  • Carry your passport: hotels, trains and some ticket offices ask for it
  • Keep a photo of your passport’s information page on your phone in case you need a replacement
  • Use the hotel safe for valuables, and watch your bag and phone in crowds
  • If you lose your passport, report it at the local police station first, then contact your embassy or consulate in China

Getting around safely

When crossing the road, watch for electric scooters and turning vehicles, even on a green light. Use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps, and don’t accept rides from people touting at stations and airports.

Wear a seatbelt on coaches and private transfers. When you travel with us, vehicles and drivers are arranged in advance.

Common tourist scams

  • Friendly strangers who strike up a conversation and invite you to a tea house or bar
  • Shops without clear prices, or goods sold by weight without a price agreed first
  • Tickets or “skip-the-line” services sold outside official channels
  • Ask the price before you buy, and keep your receipt

Mountains and outdoors

Mountain parks such as Zhangjiajie have many steps that get slippery, so wear shoes with good grip in rain and early mornings, and stay on marked paths. The weather changes quickly, so pack rain gear and a jacket. Wild macaques live in the forest park — don’t feed them, and keep food and plastic bags out of sight.

In thunderstorms, fog or ice, parks may close some trails or cable cars; follow the staff’s instructions.
